Can I drill concrete without a hammer drill?

Writer Sarah Silva

If you’re looking to drill into concrete, you have a couple of options. You can spend a lot of money on a hammer drill or you can use what’s around your house. The latter is usually much cheaper and often more effective.

One thing worth noting before showing how to do this is that the bit used will tend to dull very fast. This is no fault of the method but more of an issue with concrete in general. It’s extremely abrasive and it dulls bits quickly. As such, you’ll want to do some rough calculations as to whether or not this will be cost-effective for you.

The first thing you’re going to need is a 3/4″ piece of threaded rod and a nut that can fit on it:

You may also want a washer (not pictured). The next step is drilling into your concrete:

This can obviously go very wrong since concrete is brittle. You really should wear safety gear when doing this. I’ve found eye protection to be sufficient if done carefully. For instance, I try to find weak spots in the concrete so I don’t have to drill straight down.

The tricky part comes when trying to screw the rod through the hole you just drilled. If you use an impact driver, there’s a good chance that your bit will just snap off inside of the hole. If that happens, then you’re done with having access to that spot until you can get someone back there to dig it out for you. This is why I wouldn’t recommend an electric impact driver for this project although they are more convenient.

Instead, what worked very well was using something like a hammer or sledgehammer on one side of the nut while turning on the other side with a ratchet:

Keep on going all the way through and then use a wrench to turn the rod until it’s nice and tight.
