  • A stiff, painful jaw – this should subside after seven to ten days.

Advice on self-care

To alleviate discomfort and assist in healing, it may be beneficial to take medicines such as paracetamol (always read and follow the manufacturer’s dosage recommendations).

For a few days, abstain from intense activities and exercise. For 24 hours, sleep with an additional pillow and avoid washing, spitting, hot beverages, or anything else that may cause the blood clots that form in the vacant tooth socket to detach. For 24 hours, abstain from smoking and consuming alcohol. For a few days, consume soft or watery foods and chew using your other teeth.

After 24 hours, carefully rinse the extraction spot with an antiseptic mouthwash and continue daily for the following four days, especially after eating.

Additionally, you may use warm water with a small amount of salt, let’s say a teaspoon, as a mouthwash to soothe painful gums and inflammation.

Working and driving

Generally, it is advised that you take some days off work after your tooth extraction. You will not need a doctor’s or dentist’s note for this.

You may drive immediately after the operation if an anesthetic was used, but you should stop driving for at least 24 hours or 48 hours if a sedative was used.
