The lifespan of a double wall is the same as a single wall. If you want to reduce the distance between combustibles and the flue, the outer wall serves as a heat shield. As soon as a flue burns out, it is done.

Without an adapter, a single-wall pipe should be able to fit into a double-wall pipe. I went from a 7-inch to a 6-inch pipe by using a similar adapter, but unless your pipe needs to be extended by 8 inches, I doubt you need one. A screw-on adapter is required to fit the insulated pipe with a double wall.
