Can I workout after wisdom teeth extraction?

Writer John Campbell

Yes, although there are many things that you are supposed to know before you do it.

Yes, you can. However, in most cases, people prefer to take a day or two off and rest properly (if wisdom teeth extraction has been performed). A person usually does not feel like exerting himself/herself physically after an oral surgery procedure until the numbness and swelling go down. But if you wish to do so, make sure you do so very carefully and under supervision.

It is generally safe to work out after a wisdom teeth extraction surgery, but it will depend on the type of surgery that was performed. If you had IV sedation or GA (general anesthesia), your post-cleft lip/palate surgery activity might be limited for several days depending on how long your procedure took and whether or not you also had an orthognathic (jaw) procedure done at the same time requiring chin wiring (in which case you will likely need to wait until your wire can be removed). Let pain be your guide. It is better to stop if there’s too much pain than push yourself beyond what feels good. Doing so could increase the chances of a dry socket, which is a hole that forms at the extraction site.

You should not lift anything heavy for a couple of days or participate in any contact sports until your mouth area has completely healed. The healing process could take a few weeks to a couple of months depending on how you take care of it from this point forward. But as long as you do not strain yourself too much during the first week, the chances are good that you will heal correctly and even be able to return to some type of workout routine after your teeth have been removed without risk of damage to the healing tissues.

Some dentists recommend wearing an athletic supporter for added protection following wisdom teeth removal since it helps absorb shock and dissipate harmful forces away from body tissues and joints.
