As a means of scaring away predators, they will defecate and urinate on occasion. The odiferous, noxious liquid from the musk or scent glands opens into the vent in some snakes, and these snakes often release them when threatened or alarmed. It’s a foul-smelling substance, for sure.

Rabaiotti was able to track down an answer for her brother’s fart conundrum: yes, snakes do fart. In the Southwestern United States and Mexico, Sonoran Coral Snakes use their farts as a defense mechanism, sucking air into their “butt” (it’s actually called a cloaca) and then releasing it back out to scare away predators.

In order to frighten off predators, Sonoran coral snakes have an anus-like hole in their bodies called a cloaca. That’s a fart, to be sure.
