Snakes can, in fact, scale walls, as some species have demonstrated. But this isn’t any old wall. The snake must be able to grab hold of and propel itself off of a stationary object. As far as snakes are concerned, even the roughest of surfaces isn’t good enough.

Snakes have a much more difficult time clinging to smooth walls that have no cracks or crevices. Concrete walls, plastered or wallpapered walls, glass, and metal walls are typically inaccessible to snakes. To climb a smooth surface, a snake must have a place to rest its venomous fangs.
What kind of snakes climb walls?
Rat snakes (and many other species) use “concertina locomotion” if they’re trying to climb a smooth surface and need to keep certain parts of their bodies in place while moving forward.
How do you keep snakes from climbing walls?
Bury 1/4-inch-thick rigid mesh or solid sheeting in the ground to prevent weeds from sprouting. Snakes can’t climb up and over if the top is bent. Use snake repellents or sulfur, which are ineffective, to keep snakes out of your yard.
Can snakes climb stucco walls?
Even in a rattlesnake-fence protected area, seeing one of these snakes is not a sign that the fence has failed; in fact, snakes like Gophersnakes, Coachwhips, and kingsnakes are excellent climbers and can easily scale rough stucco walls.

Outside walls and foundations are common entry points for snakes (although some are adept climbers), so be sure to check for and seal any gaps you find. Vent holes and crawl spaces should be covered with fine metal mesh, while other gaps should be filled with spray foam.
