If the clutch lever has no free play; the clutch plate isn’t properly adjusted; shifting gears without putting the foot on the gas pedal; suddenly releasing the clutch; and careless driving with improper clutch usage can all cause the plate to burn.

Clutch overheating and clutch plate wear and tear are signs that you should be aware of if you notice a burning smell coming from your vehicle. Slow-moving traffic is the most common place for this to occur, as drivers tend to ride the clutch.
Does burning your clutch ruin it?
Even though it’s harmful in the long run, if it only happened once and you don’t notice a difference now, it’s not a problem. Any oil leaking from the cylinder head or exhaust system should be checked for leaks because it will heat up and cook, giving off a burning odor, if it gets into these places. Check the manifold area for exhaust leaks, as well. Repair or have repaired any leaks that are discovered.
