Can You Eat After Teeth Cleaning?

Writer Andrew Davis

With routine dental cleaning, you should be able to eat immediately following the cleaning unless you also had fluoride applied. It is recommended that you wait 30 minutes after receiving treatment before eating or drinking anything. When receiving fluoride treatment, it is essential that you give it enough time to be effective and for the fluoride to be absorbed right into your teeth before it can be considered effective.

The majority of people should have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year in order to avoid problems such as cavities, gingivitis, and other diseases of the mouth, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). If you do decide to eat or drink something after these appointments, avoid foods or beverages that are acidic or abrasive.

Foods to Eat After a Dental Cleaning (and When to Eat Them)

When a patient has completed their dental cleaning with us, we are frequently asked ‘what can I eat and how long do I have to wait?’ We have received this question on numerous occasions. Clearly, this is a source of worry. In the end, no one wants to immediately undo the 20-30 minutes of hard work that went into making their teeth look and feel beautiful, don’t they? In any case, if you’re one of those patients who prefers not to eat in the hours before a dental cleaning, you’ll most likely feel hungry afterward. Good news: you should be able to eat immediately following your dental examination.

If you’ve had fluoride treatment or if your teeth and gums are feeling sensitive after your cleaning, you may need to wait 1-2 hours longer before brushing or flossing your teeth. That way, any fluoride treatment will have enough time to form a proper seal around the teeth, or your gums will have had enough time to recover from their previous activity.

Given that you are in good health, we understand that you will not want to ruin your super-clean, plaque-free feeling by consuming a sugary doughnut; however, did you know that there are other food groups to which you may want to initially refrain from exposing yourself?

Cold, spicy, crunchy, sticky, and citrus-flavored foods are examples of this type of cuisine.
