Can You Eat Berkeley Polypore?

Writer Sarah Silva

If young and easy to slice, you can eat Berkeley polypore. Cut and use the softer outer edges of the caps. The mushroom becomes more woody, bitter, and tough as it ages.

Bondarzewia Berkeley is a polypore with a shelf with fruiting bodies and spores produced in the tubes that end in pores, but it isn’t close to the other polypores. It is the most genetically similar to the Lactarius and Russell. Its paradoxical character is evident in the fact that it’s edible but is often difficult to chew. It may be beneficial for health, but it hasn’t been extensively researched, and thus no one is really aware of its value. Bondarzewia Berkeley is usually known as Berkeley’s Polypore and is sometimes referred to as stump blossoms.

Aroma:

In particular on the day that it was found in the wild, and still proving to be true for certain people a few weeks later. This fungus is characterized by a strong and distinctive smell that is especially noticeable when dried. I’ve also been letting out slices to rest overnight at room temperature and worriedly checked to see if it had spoiled. It smelled quite somewhat like fresh-baked bread.

Taste:

They vary from quite light, ideal for soaking the flavor of their surroundings, as well as very strong flavored (best utilized as a spice and not as a main dish). The latter has a unique bitterness that only comes out when cooked. If consumed raw, they are extremely hot. The hot spicy effect lasts around 30 seconds to take effect.

Texture:

Immature, they can be quite tender. When they mature, their edges can be quite hefty. However, the older they get, the tougher they become. To date, I haven’t seen any that my teeth would not take; however, I’ve yet to attempt chewing through the innermost parts of my oldest finds. The experience of chewing is comparable to the chicken of the woods mushroom as both grow very hard as they get older. However, the chicken of the woods is less tough, and it is drier.

The flavor and texture may vary across people, and size is not always the main aspect.
