Can you eat guinea hen eggs?

Writer Rachel Davis

Guinea hens are not a “game bird” but a type of chicken. Because they have been domesticated, Croad Langshans and Silver Laced Wyandottes also fall under the same category as guineas. The eggs all three birds lay taste very similar to chicken eggs. This means that you can always eat guinea hen eggs.

The diet of the domesticated bird differs from that of their wild cousins, however, so if you can find guinea hens that have been roaming free and eating a natural diet, your eggs will taste much better than those of a bird kept in confinement and fed commercial feeds.

Though, guinea hen eggs just like normal eggs are not for everyone. If you have any allergies whatsoever, you should not eat guinea hen eggs.

Egg allergies are not the only concern with eating guinea hen eggs though. There is a small chance of a parasitic infection called anisakiasis if you eat raw or undercooked hens’ eggs.

To prevent this from happening, cook your guinea hen egg thoroughly before eating it.

Though guinea hens are very similar to normal chicken, there is one important difference between the two – guineas will not get sick if you eat their eggs raw. On the other hand, eating undercooked eggs of a regular chicken can be dangerous for your health. The same goes for meat. Guinea hen meat tastes very similar to chicken, but it will get you sick if you eat raw or undercooked poultry of a regular chicken.

Therefore, guinea hen meat should also be cooked thoroughly before eating.

So eventually the answer to your original question is yes – you can definitely eat guinea hen eggs. But remember that they taste best when prepared in a way that does not jeopardize your health.
