Can you eat kebab meat when pregnant?

Writer Emily Cortez

Yes, but you should be careful. A bad case of food poisoning can ruin a holiday abroad, however, for some traveling pregnant women, the risk is even greater.

Almost two-thirds of 508 mothers questioned by Mumsnet warned other expectant mothers against eating kebab meat while they are pregnant.

Certain meats contain listeria – a living bacteria which can cause listeriosis – a serious infection, which can cause miscarriage and problems for babies after birth.

Listeria can be found in raw foods such as milk, cheese, and meat as well as ready-to-eat food like frozen ready meals.

The most common symptoms of listeriosis include sickness, diarrhea, severe headaches, and flu-like symptoms. If it is contracted during pregnancy then it can lead to stillbirth or premature birth. Listeriosis occurs more frequently in the summer months due to bacterial growth occurring faster at warmer temperatures.

After confirming she was pregnant one Mumsnet user said: ‘As soon as I saw BFP (big fat positive) on the test I put my kebab meat away. I still think about that shish. I wish it hadn’t happened this time.’

Another Mumsnet user said she suffered from terrible sickness after eating takeaway kebab meat while pregnant. She was desperate to get rid of the food but her mother-in-law told her not to bin it because ‘it’s not good for the baby’. The woman confessed: ‘She saved it in case she needed an emergency kebab!’

A third user claimed that her friend became ill six months into her pregnancy after eating a kebab, leading doctors to believe she had contracted listeriosis. Thankfully the babies were born healthy.

‘The thing is, you feel like you’ve got food poisoning already,’ wrote one user. ‘Every muscle aches, you feel achy and cold and shivery. It’s revolting.’
