Can You Eat Rose Hips Raw?

Writer Robert King

To extract the seeds, rose hips are split in two. Rose hips can then be eaten uncooked. These fruits can be eaten raw, as long as they are very ripe. Of course, you must remove the hard, prickly seeds that occupy the majority of the fruit before eating the “wrapper” or red bark (pericarp of the fruit). Rose hips are a component of the rose shrub that can be eaten. They resemble little berries and appear when the bloom fades. They have a similar flavor to cranberries. Rose hips are not only tasty, but they are also good for your health. They’re supposed to aid with inflammation and are used as a laxative.

Rosehips are edible in their entirety. The ‘Hip’ is actually the rose’s fruit. Foragers generally gather Dog Rose because it’s the tastiest ( Rosa canina ). This traditional rose was once used for all those old-fashioned recipes in those dusty old cookbooks. Look for a medium-sized to large-sized rosehip (Small ones sometimes are very sour, and you get less bang for the buck, large ones can sometimes be very dry). To test them, use your fingertips.

If they’re soft and juicy on the inside, you’ve discovered what you’re searching for (if they are squishy but dry, they are ideal for the itching powder, if they are hard, they have probably not completely frozen yet). Once you’ve pulled the rose hip from its branch, you should see a small hole on the bottom of it.

This is where the tangy sweetness may be found. Give it a slight squeeze and turn it so that the access point faces you. To avoid the ‘itching powder on tongue’ sensation, make sure the seeds stay inside its skin.

However, don’t eat too many because they’re one of the few sources of nutrition for birds in the winter.
