Can You Flush Food Down The Toilet?

Writer Gabriel Cooper

The reason that some people flush their food in the toilet is that they usually don’t have a garbage disposal or composting and don’t want their kitchen to smell like food that’s been sitting in the trash can until it’s garbage day. It is not a good idea to flush food down the toilet. It’s a common mistake.

The pipes that drain your toilet are too narrow for food scraps to pass through. Because food scraps could clog your pipes and allow raw sewage to enter your home. Food doesn’t easily or quickly break down like human waste or toilet paper. It’s not likely to cause any problems if you just throw a few pieces of bread here and there. But, a bad habit of flushing food down your toilet can be more harmful than you think. Be careful if you insist on flushing food down your toilet. These are some foods you should never flush down your toilet.

  • Avoid flushing bones or hard food wastes like apple cores, corn cobs, or meat chunks.
  • Never flush oily or greasy food items.
  • Do not flush grains as they expand with water and grow into larger masses.
  • Avoid flushing starchy foods: A pile of mashed potatoes remains inside the pipe, and eventually becomes an obstruction, especially when it comes into proximity to other objects that shouldn’t be flushed.

Alternative To Flushing Food Down the Toilet

  • Garbage disposal or garburator. These machines in-drain process food waste and then dump them out to drain.
  • Composting. This is the best way for leftovers and kitchen scraps to be disposed of. This is why we keep a small container under the sink and regularly empty it into our compost bins. It never smells. You can make a compost pile in your backyard or in your condominium building.
  • Garbage. Composing is not yet available in all areas. So, the best option is to throw away the trash in the garbage. This is why many people flush their food down the toilet in the first instance. This can be avoided by freezing the waste until it is gone.
