Can you skate when it is wet?

Writer John Campbell

It is not advisable to skate when it is wet. Most of the skating rinks are indoors, so there is usually no problem. But if you regularly skate outside on natural ice, it is advisable to stay off the ice when heavy rain or snowmelt occurs.

Why should you not skate when it is wet?

Poor visibility

Water reduces your visibility, so you will have more difficulty seeing where you are going on the ice. And if someone is near you while skating, they will have difficulty seeing you too. It also creates very slippery conditions when it rains or snows heavily.

Lax traction

The water spreads across the ice, reducing friction between the blades of your skates and the surface of the ice. This means that it can be harder to stop quickly or accelerate with weight on one foot at a time.

Risks of injury

Even if your skates are sharpened regularly, wet conditions make it even more difficult to make good stops with quick backpedaling without slipping out. You may also fall forward when you try to stop very quickly. Wet ice is like a skating rink compared to the much harder surfaces of dry ice, making falls more likely. Watch out for patches of black ice!

The costs will increase

The price of maintaining your skates might go up if you need to get them sharpened more often than usual due to the wet conditions. It will cost you extra fuel because it takes longer for your car or scooter to accelerate with the extra weight of wet clothing and equipment. You could also damage your clothes or equipment in falls that would not usually happen when skating in dry conditions.

You will not improve your skills as quickly

When there is snow or rain on the ice, you have to slow down and be more careful. And because it is harder to stop and turn around quickly, you do not learn as quickly as you can when skating in dry conditions.
