Schluter ®-KERDI is a pliable sheet-applied waterproofing membrane and vapor-retarder designed for the direct application of tile. KERDI is perfect for wet areas such as tiled showers, bathtub surrounds, steam showers in homes, and other wet area tile projects.
Can I use KERDI-BOARD instead of cement board?
If you have drywall or cement board, Kerdi can be installed on top of it. However, it only protects one side if it is mounted on drywall. The back side of the drywall fails and it is just as bad or worse than if it had an issue on the tile side. Concrete board should be installed in all shower/tub areas (I prefer hardiboard).
What do you put under Kerdi membrane?
A suitable bonding mortar that penetrates and engages the membrane fleece is required when applying KERDI. For all the substrates listed in this Handbook (e.g., gypsum board, cement backerboard, etc.), Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar is recommended.
Can you tile over Kerdi membrane?
The SchluterTM-KERDI membrane requires a period of time before tile can be laid on top of it. As soon as the KERDI membrane has been completely bonded, and thus waterproofed, the assembly is ready to be tilled. There is no waiting period.
Can you install KERDI-BOARD over drywall?
Yes. Installing KERDI over the drywall panels will shield them from the shower’s water and steam.
