Is valve oil and slide oil the same?

The viscosity or thickness is what makes the difference. Thin or light oils are used for key or valves. For trombone slides, the slide oil is thicker. The oil used to lubricate the tuning slides on brass instruments (trumpets, trombones, etc.) is very thick.

Can you use slide grease as valve oil?

Slide grease or tuning slide oil is preferable to valve oil for use on your slides. Specifically designed for quick and easy movement of valves, valve oil is a thinner lubricant. You’ll want to be able to move every part of the trumpet when playing, but the valves and slides should be able to move more easily.

Can you use trombone slide oil on valves?

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have any other options, you can use oil on trombone slides. Apply several drops of a good quality valve oil to the top of the inner slides, just like you would with a liquid lubricant, to keep them moving smoothly.

What can I use instead of trumpet valve oil?

After you’ve removed any stuck valves, you can use baby oil in place of another lubricant. That way, you won’t have to worry about the valves sticking. Begin by using a small amount of baby oil, and if necessary, increase the amount to your liking. Valve oil and baby oil are very similar in terms of the mineral oil they use.
