What is the surround of a fireplace called?
An informal term for all of the components that make up a fireplace surround: the mantel, legs, returns, etc. In the end, a fireplace’s surround is the sum of its parts. The only exception to this rule would be the actual firebox.
Can you change the surround of a fireplace?
Replacing your fireplace’s fire surround is an inexpensive and quick way to give your fireplace a facelift. With a new fireplace surround, you can update your traditional fireplace, making it look more modern, or make it look more impressive in just one day.
How do you secure a cast iron fireplace to the wall?
Use a wooden baton to mark the spots on the wall. Make sure the baton isn’t too thick, so that the fireplace doesn’t touch the wall when it’s installed. Put a small hole in the outside of each leg to align with the batons with a metal drill. Self-tapping countersunk screws work well for mounting the fireplace.
How do you backfill a cast iron fireplace?
In most cases, 6 parts vermiculite and 1 part cement are used to make an insulating mixture. Alternately, 4 parts broken bricks, 2 parts sand, and 1 part lime can be combined. Before you try to backfill, put the corrugated paper, cardboard, or strawboard around the lower part of the fireback.
