Coal fireplaces, which are typically found in houses built between 1880 and 1930, are very small masonry fireplaces. It’s not uncommon for a coal fireplace to be only 20″ wide and 12″ deep, at the most. They are constructed in the exact opposite manner to modern-day fireplaces, with a height to width ratio of one to one.
