A corgi is a kind of dog. Corgis are closely related to wolves, and they come in a variety of colors including white, tan, black, grey, and brown. Corgis often used to work as guard dogs, herders, and watchdogs.

In the fall and winter months, you often hear from Corgi owners wondering if their Corgis need a coat. And as a result, many of these folks are at a loss as to what type of clothing would be appropriate to put on their dog for the colder weather.

As with all dogs, one of the first considerations when dressing them for cold or inclement weather is how much hair they have covering their bodies. In general, the longer and denser a dog’s hair coat, the more insulation from cold it will have. If you think about this in terms of people who live in very cold areas such as Alaska or Canada, those that reside there wear lots of clothes (coats and sweaters) because they don’t have enough body hair to provide the necessary insulation.

And so, since Corgis are considered to have a medium-length coat, they don’t really benefit from a coat. A Corgi with a longer coat, however, may need some type of protection from the elements.

In most instances, it’s the owner’s responsibility to provide some type of protection for their dog when they go outside during cold weather. Common sense dictates that short-haired dogs need less protection than long-haired ones.

Corgis that have thick coats are more susceptible to overheating in warm weather, so a summer coat is a must for them.

The safest way to decide what type of clothing your Corgi needs (if any) is to put your hand on his back when he is in the house. Then walk outside and check for signs of overheating, such as heavy panting or drooling. If you feel that he is too hot, then put your hand on his back again to see if it’s cooler now.

If it feels cooler, then he may need a lightweight dog sweater to wear outside.
