Do Floating Floors Bounce? - Kylon Powell
Robert King
Floating floors can be annoying, but they’re not uncommon. Professionals in the flooring industry use the term “deflection” to describe a normal amount of bounce. It may take several months for laminate floors to settle in completely, as opposed to engineered hardwood floors, which are stable immediately after installation.

When people walk on the floor, vertical movement is minimized when the subfloor is relatively flat. As a floating floor is installed on top of a pad, there will always be some degree of movement. Walking causes the pad to compress, causing the floor to move, and this happens every time you step.
Do floating floors feel spongy?
To explain why a laminate floor feels spongy, there are six possible causes. Water or termite damage, uneven subfloor, inadequate expansion gap or underlay problems, and specific subfloor structural issues are some of the reasons why laminate floors fail.
Are floating floors springy?
Except in extreme cases, floating floors shouldn’t bounce. Uneven substrates, water damage, structural damage to the wood floor’s structure, a lack of adequate expansion gaps and improper acclimatization can all cause bounces in floating floors.
Will a floating floor settle?
Floating floors will eventually settle. It’s not worth your time. If they don’t, your layout isn’t correct, and you need to start over.
What is a bouncy floor?
The joists will sag and bounce if the joists or columns are spaced too far apart. Adding an addition, installing new appliances, granite countertops, or large furniture pieces can cause the floor joists to bear additional weight and stress, resulting in a bouncy floor.
Why does my laminate floor bounce?
When there is a gap between the subfloor and the underside of the plank, a wood or laminate floor can bounce. Because the floor is not supported, it moves downward when weight is applied to it, resulting in the bounce.
Why is my vinyl floor bouncy?
When weight is applied, the flooring moves downward, resulting in a “bouncy” sensation (stepped on). It is common for flooring joints to break, squeak, or separate due to the fact that the floor isn’t properly supported from the ground up.
What keeps a floating floor from moving?
Fill in the 3/8-inch gap between the floating floorboards and the walls with a transition strip of molding. Slide the transition strip into place after applying construction adhesive to the gap. The floating floors won’t move as much with this in place.
How do you fix a soft spot under a floating floor?
An uneven sub-floor or incorrectly installed flooring underlayment can lead to soft spots in a laminate floor. You can use an air inflation needle or a syringe (used to blow up sports balls) on a can of spray foam to quickly repair soft spots in your laminate floor.
