Do guppies sleep? - Kylon Powell

Writer Caleb Butler

Guppies, like all animals, obviously sleep. However, because they do not close their eyes while sleeping, it can be difficult to detect them. Furthermore, they normally sleep in their tank when it is dark, so you may not notice it.

How can you tell if a guppy is sleeping?

Guppies may choose to rest on the substrate at the bottom of your tank, on plant leaves, on decoration, or on the water’s surface. Guppies in resting mode may appear dead and discolored. Their breathing rate decreases as well, and they may become less sensitive to sound.

Do guppies require lighting at night?

No, guppies do not require lighting at night. Guppies require darkness in order to sleep and rest properly. Leaving the aquarium lights on all the time can lead to poor sleep, illness, and, eventually, death. Guppies require six to eight hours of sleep per day, so keep the lights off for the same amount of time.

Is one of my guppies sleeping or dead?

If your guppy fish appears to be sleeping upside down, it is most likely dead or near death. Unfortunately, if your fish is motionless and floating upside-down in the aquarium, it’s probably already dead, and you should remove it and dispose of it right away.

Why do guppies die so suddenly?

Poor water quality is actually the most common cause of guppies dying in aquariums. Guppies can also die due to a lack of oxygen in the water. Putting too cold or too hot water in your aquarium will kill your guppy fish. Chlorine in tap water is poisonous to guppy fish.

Do guppies sleep on the tank’s bottom?

Because guppy fish are diurnal, they require some sleep at night to recover and conserve energy. If you notice your guppy fish floating above the gravel or another surface at the bottom of the tank during the night, don’t be alarmed; it’s just resting.

Guppies prefer to sleep in certain places.

As previously stated, guppies sleep at the bottom of the tank. However, there may be times when your guppy is at the bottom of the tank due to a problem.
