Rats are extremely tidy animals. They often groom themselves and aren’t required to smell. Rats that smell are usually resulted, accidentally, from lack of care and cleanliness. The smell that is often described as a “smell” is ammonia derived from their urine, which can be very pungent if they are left for long periods.

It is possible to lessen rats’ smells by taking simple steps. If you provide the right bedding, housing, and cleaning services it is unlikely that you will experience unpleasant smells coming from your rodents.

The general rule is that male rats are a greater cause of smells than female rats. The urine of male rats is more potent, and they can leave markings around cages. This means that urine is everywhere and everywhere!

The breed is curious, and enjoys interacting, learn with others, play, and explore. As we’ve mentioned rats are extremely clever and can be taught! If you teach the animals from a young age to use a litter box, it can reduce the spread of urine. It also means you can clean a single part of the cage every day to keep smells of rats out of the way.

Rats require a suitable-sized cage that is secure and provides adequate ventilation. Do not use glass tanks for cages because the ventilation is inadequate. Not only does it increase the risk of unpleasant smells, but it could also create health issues for your pet rats.
