Do Rats Attract Snakes? - Kylon Powell

Writer Gabriel Cooper

A snake’s presence is often a sign of food, such as an abundance of mice or rats. Snakes are logically attracted to areas with a plentiful food supply. The average homeowner doesn’t have the right tools to combat an infestation of snakes like rats and mice. It is a fact that if a snake is present, it is likely that there has been an infestation. Snakes aren’t the problem. They are wired to eat rodents by nature. Although it can be dangerous and alarming to see a snake in your home, it could also be a sign that there is a pest infestation.

Snakes are attracted towards rats

The presence of snakes in your home could be an indication that rats or mice are present. If you encounter a snake in your house, it does not necessarily signal you have a rat problem. However, if you notice it becoming a regular occurrence, it is worth checking your attic and storage areas for droppings. Snakes are known to enter houses if they think there is food.

Small holes are often located near the entrances of mice and rats so that snakes can easily find their way in. Snakes will not stay in your home for long, unlike rats and mice. Snakes enter your home to search for food. Once they have eaten their prey they will seek out a way out. A snake would only stay in a house if it couldn’t find the way out. The snake will seek out a warm, dry, quiet place if this happens.

Basements, behind appliances, and inside walls are all examples of places in your home that might fit this description. It will likely require assistance to get out of your home if a snake manages to enter it. Do not kill a snake that is found in your home. You can leave the snake alone to ensure it doesn’t try to hide. Many species of snakes are capable of living in the wild for several weeks or even months without food. Most snakes prefer to eat only a few times per week or once every few weeks. While the diet for snakes will vary depending on their species and whereabouts, many snakes eat rats, mice, and other small rodents.

Snakes are thread to humans

While most snakes pose no threat to humans they can bite and cause serious injury. However, they can be venomous. Snakes are attracted to prey and this is the primary reason they make their homes in your yard. Many snakes associate rats and rodents with their primary food source, so it is common for snakes to be found in areas that have rats and mice. You have a better chance to keep snakes away if your home is rat-free. Snakes are shy and will not interact with humans. They are good for wildlife, as they can eat slugs and grubs, bugs, and rats. While most snake species are harmless, some can be dangerous to pets and people.
