Does acupuncture help varicose veins?

Writer Robert King

Yes, although there’s unsatisfactory evidence on this, acupuncture can greatly help with varicose veins. Varicose veins are that conditions in which swollen, twisted, or enlarged veins are noticeable through the skin. It’s most common on legs and feet. Treatments can involve drugs, exercise, surgery, lasers, and magical incantations.

The evidence is insufficient to determine whether or not acupuncture helped treat varicose veins. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE ) has analyzed the results of eight clinical trials that used some form of acupuncture to treat varicose veins. For the most part, they were inconclusive about whether acupuncture was actually effective in treating varicose veins.

They found some evidence to suggest that there may be long-term benefits for patients with chronic venous insufficiency who receive traditional acupuncture. However, they also found that more research is needed before making any definitive conclusions on its effectiveness.

The best way to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating varicose veins is by evaluating its results against other forms of alternative treatment, such as exercising, wearing compression stockings, standing with legs higher than heart level, or using lasers or sclerotherapy. Once this is done, then it can be determined whether or not acupuncture really helps varicose veins.

The authors of the study concluded that there was just not enough evidence to recommend acupuncture for people with varicose veins, but it may have some benefits for patients who have chronic venous insufficiency. Patients looking for treatment are encouraged to consult their doctor before undergoing any alternative medicine protocol involving acupuncture, so they can decide on an appropriate course of action.

Just take note that there are different kinds of varicose veins, which means that if you notice them in your body, consult your doctor first so he would know what’s wrong and how best to proceed with your treatment. For example, you might wish to seek medical attention if you have varicose veins on your legs and groin, but not on your feet.
