Does acupuncture work on piriformis?

Writer Robert King

Yes, Acupuncture is a very effective alternative for patients with this condition. The piriformis is a small, pear-shaped muscle located deep within the glutes. It’s one of those “it’s complicated” parts of the body: it has tendons that connect to other muscles and go in all sorts of directions, and can therefore affect multiple areas.

That may be why we don’t have a ton of research on it, but what’s out there has some positive findings. The best results are seen in the treatment of chronic lower back pain.

One study compared acupuncture treatment with physical therapy for patients with piriformis syndrome. Patients had an average of 3 weeks of physical therapy including ultrasound, soft tissue massage, and exercises targeting the glute area before moving on to acupuncture. Those who received the acupuncture had a significant reduction in pain after 10 treatments – about 2 months of treatment.

The effectiveness of acupuncture for piriformis syndrome has been well documented in various studies. In one, researchers compared it with another form of alternative medicine called moxibustion. Moxa is an herb that’s burned over acupressure points – kind of like incense but made from herbs. They found both were equally effective in treating this condition!

A similar study split patients up into three groups: one group received medical care only (no acupuncture); another got sham needling, and a third group was treated with actual acupuncture. The results were pretty clear: those receiving real acupuncture saw greater improvements in their symptoms than those receiving sham needling or medical care alone.

Most recently, a review of the research on acupuncture for peripheral nerve pain found it may be beneficial in treating piriformis syndrome. They note that there were mixed results in some studies, but others showed positive findings – which is why they recommend further study.
