Does Cedar Wood Repel Insects?
Gabriel Cooper
It’s nice to know that bugs like these don’t like cedar, whether you have fear of insects or simply don’t want insects sticking around (Cedrus, USDA plant hardiness zones 3 to 5). Because cedar and bugs don’t mix, using cedar chips, cedarwood, or lemongrass oil as an insect repellent may be quite successful. Cedarwood is a brilliant option for your yard since it repels insects.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundAccording to the Seattle Times, while many people are aware that cedar chips repel insects, cedarwood also repels spiders, bugs, rats, and snakes. Because cedar generates natural acids and aromatic hydrocarbons (phenols), which function as insecticides, this is the case. Because the acids in cedarwood harm the tracheas and lungs of mice and other rodents, it may be used to kill them. Furthermore, when they inhale phenols, the phenols penetrate their respiratory tracts, enter their bloodstream, and eventually damage their livers.
Use rubber gloves and a face mask if you find a dead rodent in your home. Fill a plastic container with bleach and water, close the plastic bag with the body, and spray the solution where the insects were discovered. Clean the area completely before disposing of the victim.
Although this wood will just not totally eradicate insects or bugs like some animals, it will continue to protect them from your home. However, keep in mind that these eight-legged arthropods may help your garden by controlling other insects. Insect extermination or total removal from your yard may end up doing more damage than good.
Despite the benefits of insects in the yard, having them in the house can be uncomfortable, especially if you have a fear of them. Furthermore, if you live in a region where spiders can be dangerous, it may be worthwhile to invest in a comprehensive prevention system. Most people, at the absolute least, do not want their house to be infested by insects of any type.
To counteract the problem, Farmers’ Almanac suggests scattering cedar pieces and blocks about your property. You may also purchase some cedarwood essential oil and massage it into the inside or outside of your arm. Spiders, lice, gnats, ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas are all reported to be repelled by cedarwood essential oil. Cedar also has a wonderful, woody fragrance that permeates everything that it makes contact therewith. Place the chips in quiet, concealed areas such as closets, light fixtures, basements, storage areas, or anywhere else where insects and their webs can be found.
There are differences in cedar wood. True cedar trees (Cedrus spp.) have an excess oil that scares away insects, but not all cedar chips are made from them. Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) and Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) are not genuine cedars, but rather North American native green leaves used as windbreaks and attractive trees in difficult regions by gardeners. Unfortunately, their mulch isn’t especially insect-repellent. True cedars are endemic to the Middle East, including the famous deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara). The more you understand about their behaviors, the less unexpected interactions you’ll have.
