Citronella candles and torches can help keep horse flies from attacking your guests at a backyard BBQ or other outdoor gathering. The smoke and perfume produced by citronella oil can discourage horse flies. Because these insects prefer to stay outside, keeping indoors is the most effective way to avoid being bitten. Wearing heavy clothing and protective headgear can make horse fly bites more difficult (but not impossible). Horseflies are most active during the day in hot weather, especially throughout the summer and fall.

When spending time outside, the most efficient strategy to avoid horse fly bites is to use a repellent and wear long sleeves and pants. It works on fleas, biting midges (punkies, no-see-ums), and black flies in addition to mosquitoes. Snipe flies, deer flies, greenheads, and horse flies are all resistant to it. (By the way, no repellents are effective against those individuals.) Picaridin is a brand-new insect repellant. To create a dish detergent sprayer, fill the empty sprayer partly with dish detergent, 1/2 cup white vinegar, plus 1 cup hot water. Stir the solution carefully, until a homemade dish body wash dispenser is prepared. Sprinkle that on horse flies and leave them to die in a matter of a few seconds.
