Does Citrus Repel Carpenter Bees?

Writer Emily Cortez

For many or many people, the peace and beauty of a garden could be immediately ruined by the swooping, buzzing sound of the carpenter bee. We all know bees are crucial to the ecosystem, as they pollinate various vital plants, such as plants like blueberries, almonds, and cherries. It is important to encourage them to flourish (although the majority of attention is given to honeybees who are invading and not enough focus is paid to smaller, isolated honeybees in the local area).

Male carpenter bees don’t possess the bee stinger. Males are the ones you are likely to see on your porch because they’re responsible for guarding the next generation against flying insects. Female bees can sting, however, they do not sting aggressively. They only sting when they are provoked by touching or manipulating. If you try to push carpenter bees away from your home, they might move closer to you but there’s no reason to be afraid.

Carpenter bees can also pose a major threat to property and can cause structural damage over the course of time when left untreated, particularly in the event that they bore holes repeatedly to nest throughout the property. Additionally, the huge larvae that form tunnels in homes are frequently appealing to woodpeckers who may seek out the carpenter bees, causing larger damage to the existing holes.

Like all insects, carpenter bumble bees dislike the scent that citrus oil emits. Because of this, it is a perfect natural repellent for carpenter bees. Citrus oils are a secure natural repellent, which you can create your own home. Take a few peels of a variety of citrus fruits, then place them in a saucepan, overflowing with water. Bring to an unbeatable boil, then lower temperature and simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and let it cool, strain the water and pour it into the spray bottle. Spray the nest with your spray, and then reapply it until all females have left after which you can fix and paint the wood according to the next section. The spray of citrus oil in newly drilled holes can keep bees away from making their nests within the hole. You can also clean areas that are high impact with oil to prevent the bees from coming back and drilling even more.

Carpenter bees are the most important pollinators of gardens and flowering plants. They eat nectar from flowers. They also pollinate efficiently.

If you think about it you can create an environment for them to be peaceful and prevent carpenter bees from attacking your wooden structures. For this, you’ll need to build a carpenter bee home. Carpenter mason bee residences, also known as mason bee houses, are commonly referred to as inviting holes where bees are able to live.

A bee’s own space could help decrease the possibility of them finding a place in which they’re not welcome. To attract bees, put up houses in places where they often congregate. After that, you can relocate the nest into a tree away from your garden. Bees come back to the same spot every year. This is one method to move carpenter bees in a peaceful manner.
