Writer Emily Cortez

Coconut oil has earned the status of a superfood over recent years because of its composition, which is comprised of the majority of polyunsaturated fats. It is a nutritious fat, and people from all over the world are just becoming aware of the benefits of having it in their meals. A new study has proven that coconut oil could be used as a home solution for a very prevalent issue i.e; insect bites.

The research, presented in Scientific Reports, concluded that coconut oil was a more effective and more efficient repellent for insects than DEET that can be found in many insect repellents that are available in the market. The study was motivated by health concerns regarding the effects of insecticides and synthetic repellents on humans, which has led to a rise in demand for natural insect repellents.

The study has revealed the presence of specific fatty acids in coconut oil. These can be more efficient and possess an effective repellent over DEET for insects that like ticks, mosquitoes bed bugs, and bite insects like flies. All of these insects are capable of transmitting the disease to huge numbers of humans.

Researchers discovered that coconut oil-based compounds could repel biting flies as well as bed bugs for a period of two weeks, and against ticks, their repellent properties were efficient for at least one week. Applying a topical application with a high percentage of coconut oil may keep mosquitoes away and stop the possibility of dangerous mosquito bites.

Natural Mosquito Repellent’s Importance

It does contain harmful chemicals like DEET. It is therefore safeguarding the environment. They are made from different plants that are natural substances and are safe for health. Also, they are gentle and kind to skin-sensitive people.

Natural repellents can play an important effect on the human body because they are made up of essential oils. For instance, using the mosquito repellent that is made from peppermint will help improve your concentration as well as relax your muscles.

How to Make a Natural Mosquito Repellent

You’ll require 30ml pure coconut oil, pure peppermint essential oil with 10-12 drops.

Procedure

Mix the coconut oil and peppermint oils and apply it directly on your legs and hands at least two to three times per day, or before going out.

Combining peppermint and coconut oil aids in enhancing the mosquito repellent because both oils are natural repellents. Peppermint oil is a source of compounds like limonene and menthol which help to repel mosquitoes. Coconut oil contains both an emulsifier and unsaturated fatty acid properties. The loss of peppermint oil-repellent molecules is slowed down as a result of this.
