For instance, you’ll need to use one to cover existing hardwood floors, vinyl that isn’t cushioned, and concrete floors. If your vinyl plank flooring already has an underlayment, you won’t need one, but you will need a vapor barrier if it doesn’t.
Is underlayment recommended for vinyl plank flooring?
Vinyl tile or plank flooring should only be installed with underlayment if you want to reduce the volume of impact noise or sound transmission in the room. The additional sound-dampening underlayment beneath the floor will do its part.
Do I need underlayment for vinyl plank flooring on OSB?
Subfloor or underlayment is a term that varies, but you’ll need either one for the vinyl to attach to, and also for the purpose of supporting any traffic (vinyl is thin, so it needs a bit more girth to withstand use).
Do I need underlayment for vinyl flooring on concrete?
For luxury vinyl to be installed over concrete, the floor must be level and clean. You don’t have to use underlayment, but you may want to if you want the product to be quieter or more supple. You’ll have to level the concrete if it’s uneven.
What happens if you don’t put underlayment under laminate flooring?
If your subfloor is uneven, your laminate floor may shift if an underlayment isn’t used to support it. There is a greater risk of a floor warping as a result of this. It’s less likely that you’ll have to pay for costly repairs if you have more stability.
Do all floors need underlayment?
The use of underlayment is mandatory. We recommend that you buy rolls of underlayment to install your laminate floor if it is not already attached to your laminate planks.
