Snakes use their Vomeronasal System to communicate with their environment. Using a tongue flick, this internal system collects, analyzes, and releases pheromones into the environment. Snakes are able to pass on information about their gender, age, and even health and reproductive status to other snakes.

Can snakes speak?

If you mean in the real world, then no, Parseltongue – the snake language – is not real. A snake’s brain isn’t big enough for a complex language, so it can’t speak. Other snakes can probably decipher their hisses, but the information they convey is sparse and cryptic, such as ‘Danger!’
