How fast do you freefall while skydiving?

Writer John Campbell

The terminal velocity of your jump is the speed at which you will fall during your jump; it is typically around 200 kilometers per hour (120 mph). Your first few seconds in freefall will be a little slower than normal, so you’ll cover a little less distance at first, but after that, you’ll accelerate to full speed and cover the rest of the distance.

Speed of freefall

The freefall is the most rapid part of your skydiving experience if you are jumping with a partner. As you might have guessed, freefall is the period of time that occurs between the time that you exit the airplane and the time that you deploy your parachute. If you fall during this period of time, you are falling free, but not necessarily falling freely! The reason for this is purely semantic: technically, the definition of freefall in physics is the downward movement of an object caused solely by the force of gravity. When a tandem pair falls, the force of gravity acts on them, but there is another force at work as well. Despite the fact that the air appears to be “empty,” it is actually composed of a large number of invisible air molecules. As the tandem skydiving pair plummets to the ground, they collide with the air particles, which are pushed aside in the same way that a swimmer pushes his or herself through the water. As a result of the collision with these air particles, air resistance (also known as drag) is created, which prevents the falling object from increasing its speed indefinitely. As a result, your ultimate speed is determined by something known as terminal velocity.

Conclusion

So, how quickly do you plummet when you skydive? This will be determined in part by the amount of air resistance you encounter on your journey. By definition, terminal velocity is a constant speed that is reached when a falling object encounters enough resistance to prevent it from accelerating any further. The fastest speed you will reach on your skydive is known as terminal velocity, and it is typically around 120 miles per hour.
