How hard is it to change injectors on a duramax

Writer Emily Cortez

Early Duramaxes came with a lot of problems. The main issue with ’01-’04 or half LB7 models is their injectors’ tendency to fail, often before the engine has reached 100,000 miles. If an LB7 injector fails it could release a huge amount of gasoline into an engine, usually at extremely low speeds (such as idle speeds for instance). In this case, the excess fuel isn’t burned, but it gets to the engine’s oiling systems, and then starts filling the engine with diesel fuel.

However, Duramax injectors are both costly and difficult to access inside the engine compartment to replace, which led GM to extend the injector’s warranty to 200,000 miles. The majority of the work involves getting to the injectors in the first place, and when one or two of them are damaged the usual replacement is the entire set. One way to test injectors is to test the balance rates. Balanced rates of 4 areas the highest allowable rate, whereas “good” is usually +2.

Procedure:

Once the intake is taken out of the way then comes then the filter for fuel, housing, and the lines. This entire system must be removed to get access to the cover of the valve. A portion of the computer hardware has to be removed, the fuel injection control module (FICM) is located on the passenger side of the valve cover. Although the main computer is moved out of the way, the mount along with a lot of electrical connections and rubber are also required to be temporarily moved. A line that connects that rail’s common rail, to an injector line, is finally visible. To gain entry to the injectors, the lower and upper valve covers must be withdrawn. Once the upper valve cover is off, the valvetrain of the LB7 and injectors can be seen. The lower cover can now be removed. can be removed this is one of the steps that will be required prior to the removal of the injector. Then, you can remove the return line for injectors, taking care not to cut any bolts holding it. This is among the few tools of a specialty to extract the line using an injector puller.
