How long does it take brick to dry?

Writer Andrew Davis

It can take 24 to 48hours for a brick to dry depending on the following factors:

  1. the thickness of the mortar that was used in between the brick and the surface it is laying against.
  2. If it is cold outside and it’s raining. Colder temperatures require longer for a brick to dry. Raining does not affect drying time at all.
  3. If and when you put down your brick, you laid it level and flat, such that the brick can soak up as much water as possible.
  4. Some bricks simply take longer to dry than others. If your brick is old and has sunken in at the center, or if it’s not a standard size, it will take longer to dry. This is very rare.
  5. If your brick is laid over something like tar paper, it will take longer to dry.
  6. If you put down a downspout directly on top of your brick, (without mortar in between), it will take longer to dry. This is rare because most people would use mortar or maybe plywood with no mortar.

In short, bricks take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to dry. It all depends on the factors mentioned above. however, a brick can sit for up to a week and still be fine as long as it is not raining outside.

Remember, if you’re going to lay down a patio or build a brick wall it’s important to remember that bricks take a very long time to dry. this is not just because of the mortar, but also the brick itself tends to “pull” water from the mortar and therefore takes a long time to fully dry.

In conclusion, if you are going to do any sort of brickwork it’s important to remember that bricks take a very long time to dry. even if it’s cold outside the brick itself may not be fully dry for over a week.

Bricks can also become “hard” while they are still drying, so use caution when using power tools around bricks. one wrong slip of the drill could break your mortar or crack your brick. The best way to work with bricks is to let them dry fully before doing anything with them.
