How long does it take fiberglass to dry?
David Wilson
Fiberglass is a glass fiber reinforced plastic composite with excellent chemical resistance properties. In regards to how long the fiberglass takes to dry, the curing process for our glass fabrics takes about 2 hours. This includes 30 minutes to first coat and then 1 hour undisturbed (no heat, sunlight, or wind). While curing, we ask customers to protect their panels with plastic sheeting and cover them with another piece of fabric if necessary. After two hours we suggest removing the plastic sheeting; however, you should allow up to 12 hours before installation. how long this process takes depends on the following factors:
Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Aro... Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Around- temperature. the warmer the temp the faster it cures. UV exposure is another factor that can speed up or slow down curing;
- humidity is another factor in determining the time to cure…. the lower the humidity, the faster it will dry….and vice versa;
- purity of resin mix…if there are impurities in a resin/hardener mix it may take longer to cure depending on the type and extent of the contamination.
- type of resin…aspect ratios affect the crosslink density and therefore the cure rate.
- additives can also play a role in determining the time to cure…some additives may extend/shorten the cure time. Or have no effect at all.
- amount of catalyst in a mix may also affect the cure time, however, this is usually a minor role in determining cure rates.
- condition of glass cloth…if the fabric has been stored in humid conditions before curing, this can cause extra cure time.
- additional coats…the more cloth you use, the longer it will take to cure. However multiple passes are not recommended as the quality will suffer greatly.
- UV exposure…prolonged UV exposure will help cure the product faster.
Following these simple guidelines, works best for curing our glass fabrics.
