How long does it take to charge a Chevy bolt?

Writer Caleb Butler

It can take up to 9.5 hours to charge a Chevy Bolt with a 240 volt, 50 amp supply. This is using the $750 tesla home charging equipment that tesla will be giving away free to people that buy a bolt.

A standard outlet is 110 volts, which means you’ll be plugging your car into one of those extension cords running out of an upstairs window to some guy’s truck. If you’re lucky, the truck is running and he’ll be willing to share his power with you.

There are some very fast-charging stations that get you 170 miles of range in 30 minutes for $500,000 or about $2500 per minute; however, no one has put these on the market yet. They include the ability to dump power from your electric company when you’re not using it, so the price drops to about $100 per minute.

It’s important to note that there are several things that come into play when charging a Chevy Bolt. The first is the time it takes to charge, but also you have to consider how far your Bolt would have gone if left on its own.

Even on the free 240 volt Tesla equipment, it could take up to 9.5 hours to get a full charge depending on how drained the battery was when plugged in. There are some companies that will sell you a 30 amp (240 volts) charging station that will get you up to 80% in about 4 hours. So the rate difference is quite noticeable.

If your 240-volt station uses 50 amps like Tesla’s home charger, and your Bolt is drained of all its charge, it could take up to 9.5 hours to get a full charge. If you have a 30 amp station it would take about 4 hours, and if you have a 10 amp charging station it could take as long as 48 hours to charge your Bolt.

This is why it’s important to know exactly where you’re going before you leave the house since even with a 240 volt, 50 amp home station that comes with the tesla free equipment it could take 9.5 hours to charge your Bolt. This is also assuming you have access to the charger, which many people do not so this time could vary greatly depending on your situation.
