How long does it take to fix a cracked rim?

Writer Rachel Davis

Cosmetic repairs will take about 3days to fix but structural damage like a crack or pothole may take 5days to fix. The repairs done at the shop are dependent on our backlog and priority of work; this can vary from one location to another.

The cost for repairing a cracked is around $50 to $400 per wheel. It depends on the shop, what they pay for parts and how long it takes. A simple repair will cost around $50 to $75 per wheel. The repair job is done in three steps. First, remove the tire from the rim with a valve core removal tool or special rim-thru-tire puller tool. These tools are sold in tire repair kits. Second, patch both sides of the crack with epoxy to prevent it from spreading into the rim bed. Third, sand smooth surface where the patch is located. Re-check fit of tire on the rim for proper seating to recheck bead seating and transition onto casing side wall after all repairs have been made.

If you are very specific about what kind of rim you want, there is a chance of getting it custom-made for you which will cost around $100 per wheel. But the quality is not guaranteed because it’s handmade and can be cracked too. A good alternative is to get them from junkyards or thrift stores where they sell them for a cheaper price. If you just need a rim to use temporarily while your other one is being fixed, the local hardware store will sell steel rims for $5 each. But there are some disadvantages because it’s difficult to balance and could warp easily under pressure from the tire if it doesn’t fit perfectly on the hub. Also, be careful because you might end up sacrificing the size and appearance of your tire.

Repairing an aluminum wheel will cost around $50-$150 per wheel depending on the damage done and if you do it yourself or bring it to professional shops. First, inspect the damage done to the wheel and decide what kind of repair would be appropriate. Some people use a small drill bit and inject epoxy into the crack from the backside of the rim shell.
