How long does it take to get good at skateboarding?

Writer David Wilson

We all want to get good at skating, we all dream of the day we can do some awesome Man-Manuals and Craig Kondaks. It seems like everyone wants to know how long it will take them before they get good at skateboarding. I am here to answer that question for you.

Short Answer: 24 hours

Longer Answer: 24 hours. It will take around 24 hours of skating to be considered an expert in skateboarding. But before we go into the math behind the conclusion let me tell you about my uncle for this article. He is your typical suburban dad who has recently taken up skateboarding. When I asked him the question, “How long until you get good at skateboarding?” He quickly replied, “In a couple of months”. That was a bit discouraging knowing that it will take around 10 years of skating for him to become an expert.

Let’s do some math, shall we? First, we need to establish your skill in skateboarding. Let’s say that your skill is measured by Stoked Mentality, which is a pretty accurate way of measuring one’s individual skateboarding ability. I would consider myself to have an S-8 Stoked Mentality, meaning I am stoked at everything all the time. Don’t believe me? Read on.

If your Stoked Mentality is S-8, then it will take 8 hours to learn one hour. If you’re stoked Mentality is S-4, then it will take 4 hours to learn one hour. Keep in mind that this could vary depending on the person, but I don’t think it will vary that much.

In conclusion, it will take 24 hours of practice to become an expert at skateboarding. I would assume that the time frame for becoming an expert is shorter if you spend most of your time skating, but this should be a good enough estimate.
