How long does it take to install a new furnace?

Writer Caleb Butler

4-8 hours is enough to install a new furnace. When it’s time to replace the heating system in your home, you’ll probably be surprised by just how long the process can take. From decisions on exactly what type of furnace to install to the actual installation itself, you’re looking at several days before you feel safe staying in your house without wearing multiple layers. Let’s look at each step of the process.

1. Choosing a Furnace

The first step of the furnace installation is choosing a furnace. This may seem easy, but it can actually be harder than you’d think. There are so many different brands and models available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages that you’ll have to do some research before picking out a furnace. For example, if you have a small house that’s particularly drafty, using a furnace with forced air induction will provide the highest possible level of comfort at the lowest cost to operate.

2. Furnace Installation

Now that you’ve chosen a model of furnace, it’s time for the installation itself. This includes running the new line from the furnace, installing the new furnace in the right place, and hanging pipes from it. This is a point when you can easily get overwhelmed by all of the different things that need to be done for a good installation.

There are a few things that can determine the time it takes to install a new furnace. If the existing furnace is in good condition, you might be able to install it in half a day or less (ranging from 4 hours to 8 hours). If the existing furnace is an older model that needs to be replaced, the installation will probably take 2 days. The length of time for this step depends entirely on the current state of your home’s heating system.

DIYer or using a professional can equally make a difference. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure that you’ve done enough research and have all of the necessary tools. If not, consider hiring a professional contractor
