How long does it take to train a cavachon?

Writer Rachel Davis

The time it takes to train a Cavachon puppy will depend on many factors. To potty train, a Cavachon puppy can take less than 2 weeks, while for other Cavachon puppies, it can take more than a month. The most common training methods involve the pet owner tapping their fingers on a treat and making a clicking sound near the puppy’s nose to get him to respond.

Some of these puppies will respond immediately, while some others will require some time getting used to this type of tapping on their nose from an owner.

The training period can be lengthened if owners want them to learn commands such as “sit”, “stay”, and even “down”. It is important for dog owners to make sure that they are consistent when teaching new tricks or commands for Cavachon puppies. Dog owners need not train all of their daily activities with a Cavachon puppy; some training can be done in the backyard.

Here is an example of how long it can take for a Cavachon puppy to learn some basic commands:

  • To sit, tap your fingers on the nose and then give them a treat while saying “sit”. Do this repeatedly until they become consistent with sitting after you tap their nose. If they do not respond at all, try giving them pets while you are tapping their nose until they become comfortable with it. Some may just catch on faster than others.
  • Once the dog has been taught to sit consistently, attach a “stay” command to that trick. Tap their nose and hold up one finger before saying “stay”. Follow by bringing down one finger, or two fingers for those who are more advanced. Keep repeating the action and follow by rewarding them with a treat each time they succeed in staying seated for 3 to 5 seconds before giving them the treat.
  • Use the same tapping method for “down” as you did for “sit”, but instead of keeping your fingers up, slowly bring them down until their chin touches the ground. After that, give them a treat and say “good boy/girl”.

For some Cavachon puppies, it may take more than 30 days until they can successfully master these basic commands and tricks. Owners need not force their pets to do something they do not particularly like or would rather not perform; some owners may find this unfair so is best to train only what is simple.
