How loose should roller skate trucks be?

Writer David Wilson

Roller skate trucks should be fairly tight (not much play or wiggle in the truck when installed on the skate), but not too tight either. You want to tighten your truck up enough so it doesn’t slip off when doing hard turns, but not too tight because it’s difficult to do easy turns and could make grinding really hard. I always set my trucks so I can turn and grind pretty easily and it isn’t too loose or tight. There are countless things that you should know in this case, but I just wanted to point out how you should set your trucks up.

This shouldn’t be too tight or too loose.

There is a good amount of space between the screw and the skate. If you have too much room, it will be loose and you won’t be able to turn hard. If you have too little space, it will be really tight and you won’t be able to grind or turn at all.

This is a bad idea because your trucks might fall off while skating! Be careful with loosening these trucks a lot, just barely loosen until they’re not falling out anymore.

You are tightening your truck by turning the two screws clockwise. Now you should have a good amount of space between that screw and your skateboard, just enough to get air when doing an ollie.

Normally the trucks are tightest at the top because this is where it’s tightest on the bushings (the white plastic pieces in between your wheels and deck). This is normal though if you want to make sure they don’t fall off, but some people like their trucks looser at the top so they can grind easier or harder depending on their preference. You shouldn’t need too much more looseness on one end over another unless you’re on smaller wheels.
