How Many Coats Of Polyurethane On Hardwood Floors?

Writer Robert King

For hardwood flooring, we recommend at least two coats of oil-based polyurethane and one coat of lacquer sealer. Oil-based polyurethane requires 24 hours to dry before another coat can be applied, so only one coat can be applied in a day.

Is 2 coats of polyurethane enough for floors?

At least two coats of polyurethane should be applied. Apply at least three coats to surfaces that will be subjected to heavy foot traffic, such as floors, tables, chairs, and other furniture. You can apply up to five coats of water-based polyurethane to floors and sheds.

How many coats of polyurethane should go on hardwood floors?

So, how many more polyurethane coats do you think you’ll need? Hardwood floors require a minimum of three coats of polyurethane.

How many coats of polyurethane is too many?

Even if you only apply one coat, you’ll be fine. However, if using oil-based polyurethane or water-based polyurethane, limit the number of coats to four or five. When applying more paint, you can’t get away with applying fewer coats than when applying less paint.

What happens if you don’t sand between coats of polyurethane?

If you don’t sand between polyurethane coats, nothing happens with some types of poly. Most polyurethanes won’t stick if you don’t remove dust nibs and brush marks from the surface. Eventually, the polyurethane coating will flake off or deform.

How soon can you apply second coat of polyurethane?

Adding additional coats will stick to the previous coats rather than soak into the wood, so they may take longer to dry than the first coat. Water-based polyurethanes require a 2 hour dry time in between coats, while oil-based polyurethanes require an 8 hour dry time in between coats.

Is 5 coats of polyurethane too much?

There is little benefit to applying more than three coats of polyurethane. It isn’t necessary and isn’t even recommended. This means that each additional coat must be buffed in order to remove half of the previous coat. As a result, the recommended number of coats is actually closer to 3.5.
