Writer Andrew Davis

Do free range chickens keep snakes away?

Can snakes get through hardware cloth?

Wire mesh snake fences necessitate small weave openings. Choose hardware cloth or metal mesh with a weave opening of no more than a quarter inch for best results. Anything larger may not be able to keep snakes out as effectively.

What’s a good snake deterrent?

Sulfur, clove and cinnamon oil, and vinegar, among other natural repellents, may be effective in the fight against snakes. If you’ve seen snakes on your property, spray the perimeter with these products.

Is it OK for chickens to eat snakes?

There is no danger to your birds unless it is a large reptile. Snakes are elusive, so it’s not likely that it will happen frequently. Just put it down to a chicken being resourceful and getting some extra protein.
