A minimum of two smoke alarms should be installed in every home; more should be installed if practicable, based on the house’s size and the number of rooms. A battery-operated or hardwired Firex smoke alarm is a common alarm.

1. Take the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket by rotating it around. Hands-on: Grip the entire top of the smoke detector and turn it approximately a half-inch to reset it. Once it’s released, you can simply peel it off. Once the battery is exposed, the secret will be revealed.

2. Take the old battery and discard it properly. The battery must be replaced before mounting the unit. Battery replacement reminders are an added layer of security from the manufacturer. Remove the battery cover by opening the small door on it. To remove a battery, just lift one end with your fingernail and grab it with the other two.

3. Make sure the polarised ends are facing the correct direction when installing the new battery. The battery and the smoke alarm have + and – marks that let you know this. AA batteries have one prong that faces outward, while 9-volt batteries have two prongs that must be pushed firmly into place. Close the small door on the top of the cover.

4. Set it straight on the bracket and move it clockwise until the groove is set. Then rotate it around about a half-inch till it ends and you could no more lift the covering off. Place it back on the bracket.

5. Push the large test button in the center of the smoke alarm to see if it works. Make sure your ear isn’t too close to the smoke alarm before pressing the button and holding it down for around five seconds. It will make a 10-second beeping noise. In order to demonstrate proper battery operation, make sure the small LED light blinks once every minute to ten seconds.
