How To Change Ball Joints On 1997 Ford f150

The Ford F-150’s steering system is complete without the ball joint. Ball joint acts as a link between the control arm and steering knuckle which allows the wheels to react to the movement that the wheel of steering. Although ball joints can last for over 80,000 miles, extreme weather can cause premature wear. If you hear the ball joints clicking when turning on rough terrain or turning, it is time to replace them.

Step 1

Use a jack to raise your truck and then use a jack stand to support it. The jack stand needs to be put under the undercarriage of the truck. Then, take off the jack, and make sure the truck is well supported. To take the bolts off the lug nuts Use a wrench to remove the wheel away.

Step 2

You will need a socket wrench in order to remove the two bolts that secure the caliper bracket and the steering knuckle. Once the bolts have been removed, remove the caliper from the coil and tie it with a piece of wire to ensure it does not hang in the air as you work.

Step 3

To remove the cotter pin, use a drum brake tool. You can take off the end of the tie rod by pounding the steering knuckle using a mallet until the rod end is released.

Step 4

You’ll require an impact wrench to take off your wheel’s hub nuts. The next step is to find the ball joint on the top using a mallet. Then, take off the nuts. To pop the upper ball joint, use a mallet to hit it with a mallet. Then, use pliers to remove the snap rings.

Step 5

Locate the lower joint and take out the nut. Use a mallet to hit the side of your lower ball joint. It will pop right out of your knuckle. As with the upper joint, remove the snap ring. To completely remove the ball joints from each knuckle, use a press
