How to change filament mid print

Writer Robert King

Manually stop the printing process yourself and then remove the filament manually by hand. Manual process adjusting the filament can be the simplest technique of setup. Before we begin the real changing operation, there are just a few preliminary actions you should take.

Convenient Prep:

The first thing you may be able to do is to use a G-code code that will show the current layer on the printer’s screen. This will allow you to check your printer’s status to determine if it’s ready to go to switch on the filament.

The 2nd step is knowing when to change filaments; this will come in handy later on.

Change filament method of operation:

  1. When you see Your Ender 3’s display, you can pause the printing.
  2. When your printer is in its paused state, you must adjust the bed and temperature of the nozzle to return to the temperatures you previously using. The heated nozzle allows you to take off the filament at the next step. The heated bed will ensure that the print does not lose its adhesion to the building plate.
  3. Withdraw the filament with caution. Add fresh filament to the printer. The filament must be inserted gently via the PTFE tube and heated side to ensure that it does not break.
  4. If you feel any resistance while pressing the filament take a look at the nozzle. Continue pushing through the filament to can see the filament emerge out from the nozzle.
  5. Take care to remove, with tweezers, any compressed filament your nozzle has just generated.
  6. If this isn’t this is the case, change the temperature of your nozzle so that it’s suitable for the new filament then restart the print. If you are printing the first layer after any changes to the filament, you might need to add an additional 5 degC to the temperature of the nozzle to ensure you can ensure that this layer bonds to the one below.
  7. Be aware of the next layer being extruded over the print that’s already in place to ensure that the switch is working. If you observe an alteration in the layer. You’ll need to cancel the print, then restart.
