How to choose roller skate wheels?

Writer Andrew Davis

When choosing skate wheels, you need to consider different factors such as:

Size. there are two sizes (diameter in inches or cm), always make sure to get one size bigger than your shoe size, otherwise, your skate will be too tight and uncomfortable.

Hardness. the harder the wheels, the more grip they have, but also wear down faster. You can try different hardness of wheels for a different look or experience. If you want to keep your skates longer you may consider getting softer ones.

Amount of urethane. This is a really important factor when it comes to durability and control over wheels. A wheel with a low amount of urethane has a lot of grips and a very smooth ride but wears off quickly. A high amount of urethane gives less grip, but it is more durable and the smoothness of the ride is even better.

Shape. the wheel may be conical, which means that the wheel gets slightly narrower closer to the outer edge. This shape provides a better grip than a flat shape on various surfaces.

Surface material. some wheels are made of hard plastic while some have textured surfaces so you can get a better grip when skating on streets with different textures.

Bearing type. not all roller skate wheel bearings are alike, so you should choose one that goes well with your skates.

Bearing size. You can easily check what size you need by measuring or comparing it to the existing one.

Cost is also a factor when choosing wheels. If you want something that is durable and will last for a long time or if you skate a lot, then it’s better to invest in good quality skates that have a bigger urethane amount when it comes to the wheels. However, if you only skate a little bit and don’t go skating on streets or high speeds, there are cheaper options available
