In order to determine whether potato chips have developed an off odor, flavor, or appearance, it is advisable to smell and examine them. If mold appears on the potato chips, they should be thrown. In order to keep chips fresher longer, manufacturers inject this preservative gas into the bags. Were the bag filled with regular air, the chips would most certainly become mushy and stale and rot.
Closing a bag:
When it comes time to close the bag, rotate it so that the opening of the bag is in front of you. Grip the corners of the open end with your index finger on top of the bag and your thumbs underneath. To close the bag, fold the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) of the bag over on itself and tuck it inside the bag. Continue folding the bag in 1–2 in (2.5–5.1 cm) layers for another 1–2 in (2.5–5.1 cm). To close the bag using a clip, begin by folding the corners of the bag inward and rolling the bag inward again. Then, using the sharp corners at the top of the bag, roll them downward until the bag is completely rolled and sealed.
Conclusion:
All of the air in chip bags has a purpose, and it isn’t air at all; it is nitrogen gas, which is harmless to humans. Before the chips are packaged, nitrogen gas is pumped into the bag. The gas is used to remove oxygen from the bag, which is then filled with chips and sealed with a zipper.
