Amazingly, despite squirrels depending greatly on their tails for their daily tasks, and even for mating and survival, it is possible to survive without having a tail. Sometimes, squirrels lose their tail or other parts is involved in battles against other squirrels or encounters with predators or even accidents such as being trapped inside the doorway.

The tail assists in balancing the squirrel when it leaps from tree to tree and also assists it in quick turns, or just resting on branches. They can live for an extended time in the wild, but without their tail, they are more at risk of early death. A squirrel with no tail is unable to maintain a steady balance in trees and is more at the chance of falling.

Tail injuries are common among tree squirrels of all kinds which include the gray squirrel, fox squirrels, and red squirrels. They generally, do not require extra assistance from human beings who are well-meaning. Also, squirrels do not grow tails. When they’ve lost the “bushy” from the bushy tail is gone, it’s gone forever for the duration of time. A portion of the tail may be lost to the grasping predator, however, the skin’s thin layer and muscle could be taken off without harm and a snagged tail could allow squirrels to flee.

Save a squirrel’s tail

Remove your tail from the body of the squirrel. After you’ve removed your tail, take off any flesh that is connected with the tailbone. With a few borax rub it on the tail of the squirrel. The tail is now preserved and processed.
