The covers might become stained, the hinges may break, its poles could warp, and then start to appear unattractive. You can’t put it in the yard alongside the other garbage.
- Call the business that is delivering the new sofa or bed. Some furniture stores will be able to remove your old futon once the new sofa or bed is delivered. Contact the store prior to delivery, or arrange for it when you purchase your new sofa or bed to let the retailer know that it will make the pickup in addition to delivery. If this isn’t possible then proceed to step 2.
- If the futon is in decent condition, which means it’s not damaged or stained or stained, you may be able to give it away. Contact women’s shelters, homeless shelters, halfway houses, or charities like Goodwill and the Salvation Army. They may offer to bring in the futon. You can also post an advertisement for it on Freecycle as well as the section for free on Craigslist. Include a picture, and mark that the Futon as “free to be picked up.” Even when the mattress isn’t usable there is a chance that someone would still want the frame. If the frame and the futon are in bad condition proceed to step 3.
- Find a recycling facility. Contact your local departments of solid waste and ask whether they have a recycling center that will accept the old futon mattress. If yes, they could provide pickup on specific dates of the month. If not, you can search online for mattresses recycling centers. Search engines like Earth911 permit users to enter the zip code followed by the object that is to be recycled and then create a list of recycling centers that accept futons. The futon frame can typically get recycled in any center for recycling. If recycling isn’t an option.
